Deep Dive
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan has significantly revised his timeline for the widespread adoption of on-chain finance. He observed a surge in investor activity on crypto platforms like Hyperliquid for trading tokenized assets during the recent US-Israel tensions concerning Iran.
During the weekend of the initial attack on Iran, when traditional stock exchanges in the US, Europe, and Asia were closed, the crypto derivatives platform Hyperliquid emerged as a central venue for trading real-world assets. Hougan noted that for most of Sunday, on-chain finance was the focal point of global financial activity.
Previously, Hougan anticipated a five-to-10-year timeframe for traditional markets to transition to on-chain operations. However, the events of that weekend convinced him that this shift will occur much more rapidly. He highlighted that blockchain's 24/7 trading capabilities render traditional stock exchanges and T+1 settlement systems obsolete.
Hyperliquid experienced substantial trading volume, exceeding $11.5 billion across Saturday and Sunday for real-world asset (RWA) trading. Hougan pointed out that media outlets, such as Bloomberg, cited Hyperliquid's crude oil contract as the most relevant price indicator when reporting on the market's reaction to the geopolitical events.
Beyond crude oil, other tokenized assets also saw significant activity. Tether Gold (XAUt), Tether's tokenized gold product, recorded a 24-hour trading volume exceeding $300 million. Additionally, trading volumes on prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket experienced an increase.
In January, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and its parent company, Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), announced plans to introduce 24/7 trading and instant settlement for stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) using a blockchain-based post-trade system. This system is intended to support multi-chain functionality and custody features.
However, details regarding the launch timeline, the specific blockchain to be used, and whether the platform would operate in a permissionless or permissioned environment have not yet been disclosed.
Hougan concluded that currently, hedge funds, banks, and other investors seeking competitive trading options must adopt stablecoin wallets and familiarize themselves with trading on crypto derivatives platforms like Hyperliquid.
