Deep Dive
Bitcoin (BTC) bulls are targeting a return to the $80,000 level in March, supported by several indicators suggesting increased upside momentum. The cryptocurrency saw a significant jump of over 5% on Wednesday, nearing $72,000.
Bitcoin's price action on Wednesday appeared to invalidate a bearish chart pattern, a bear pennant. The BTC/USD pair broke above the pennant's upper trend line, accompanied by a rise in trading volume, signaling stronger conviction in the upward movement. This breakout also increased the likelihood of a bullish reversal pattern known as a symmetrical triangle.
A symmetrical triangle is characterized by lower highs and higher lows, indicating a period of consolidation. Typically, the price will break out of this range, moving a distance equivalent to the triangle's widest point. For Bitcoin, the triangle's range spans from approximately $63,000 to $71,000–$72,000. A standard measured move from this pattern, if the breakout is sustained, suggests a potential target of around $80,000 in March. This level also coincides with Bitcoin's 100-day exponential moving average (100-day EMA).
The immediate resistance for BTC is the 50-day EMA, located near $74,400. A failure to surpass this level could lead to a pullback towards the 20-day EMA, which is around $68,700.
The $80,000 target derived from the symmetrical triangle pattern aligns with an unfilled CME futures gap. This gap, which has existed since early February, ranges from approximately $79,660 to $81,210. CME gaps occur when the futures market closes over the weekend, and the spot price moves significantly, leaving an empty price zone upon reopening.
Historically, nine out of the last ten CME gaps have been filled since August 2025. This track record suggests that traders may view the $79,660–$81,210 region as a significant target as spot and futures prices converge.
The crypto-based prediction market, Polymarket, indicates a growing bullish sentiment for Bitcoin in March. Currently, traders assign a 40% probability that Bitcoin will reach $80,000 by the end of March, a notable increase from 20% the previous day. The $75,000 price target holds even stronger conviction at 70%, up from 40% yesterday.
Concurrently, the odds for Bitcoin reaching lower price points like $65,000 and $60,000 in March have decreased, suggesting a general reduction in downside expectations among market participants.
