Chainlink CCIP enables cbBTC transfers from Base to Monad
Over $5 billion in Bitcoin-backed liquidity can now enter Monad's DeFi ecosystem
Monad aims to attract transaction-intensive financial applications with its high-throughput EVM-compatible L1
This integration enhances Bitcoin's utility by enabling yield generation opportunities within Monad's DeFi.
Deep Dive
Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) has facilitated the transfer of Coinbase's wrapped Bitcoin token, cbBTC, from the Base blockchain to the Monad blockchain. This integration allows for the movement of over $5 billion worth of cbBTC into the Monad ecosystem, introducing Bitcoin-backed liquidity to its decentralized finance (DeFi) applications.
The integration brings cbBTC into Monad's DeFi landscape, with applications like Curvance and Neverland already adopting cbBTC markets. Monad, an EVM-compatible layer-1 blockchain, is designed for high-throughput trading and financial use cases, aiming to support transaction-intensive applications with its touted throughput of up to 10,000 transactions per second and sub-second finality.
William Reilly, head of strategic initiatives at Chainlink Labs, stated that the infrastructure for moving Bitcoin-backed assets must scale with their growing value, which is now in the tens of billions. He highlighted that CCIP's multi-layered decentralized validation is designed to mitigate cross-chain risks and ensure consistent 1:1 backing across networks.
Coinbase launched cbBTC in September 2024 on Ethereum and Base. This token is backed 1:1 by BTC held in custody and is designed to automatically mint and redeem against Bitcoin deposits on the exchange. Unlike proof-of-stake networks where users can earn staking rewards, Bitcoin's proof-of-work design does not natively generate yield, historically limiting onchain income options for Bitcoin holders.
New financial structures are emerging to address this gap. In May, Solv Protocol co-founder Ryan Chow noted an acceleration in demand for Bitcoin yield strategies, particularly from companies seeking liquidity without selling their Bitcoin. He pointed to proof-of-stake integrations and delta-neutral trading as expanding avenues for Bitcoin to generate returns.
Coinbase also launched the Coinbase Bitcoin Yield Fund in May, targeting 4% to 8% annual net returns for international institutional investors. In June, Kraken introduced a Bitcoin staking product via an integration with Babylon Labs, enabling users to lock up BTC and delegate it to secure proof-of-stake networks without bridging or wrapping.
Wrapped Bitcoin has seen expansion across networks, with WBTC integrating with the Hedera network in November. More recently, Telegram's TON Wallet added vaults allowing users to earn yield on Bitcoin within the messaging app through underlying DeFi infrastructure.
