Ether Exchange Reserves Hit Multi-Year Low Amidst Market Divergence

The total balance of Ether (ETH) held on cryptocurrency exchanges has fallen to a multi-year low, with over 31 million ETH withdrawn from centralized exchanges in February. This marks the largest monthly outflow since November. Despite the ETH price hovering near $2,000, derivatives data indicate a divergence between smaller buyers and larger sellers, raising questions about potential price reactions if demand becomes more uniform.

Ether Exchange Reserves Signal Supply Squeeze

Crypto analyst Arab Chain reported that more than 31.6 million ETH were withdrawn from major exchanges in February, the highest monthly outflow since November. Binance saw the largest withdrawals, accounting for approximately 14.45 million ETH, followed by OKX with about 3.83 million ETH and Kraken with close to 1.04 million ETH. These sustained withdrawals reduce the readily available supply for spot trading, potentially increasing price volatility during periods of high market activity.

Data from CryptoQuant further shows that Binance's Ether reserves have decreased to around 3.46 million ETH, the lowest level recorded since 2020. This trend continues a gradual downtrend observed in previous cycles, where reserves peaked above 5 million ETH before declining.

With ETH trading below $2,000, the contraction in exchange supply intensifies focus on future demand. A scenario where buying pressure increases while reserves continue to fall could lead to tighter liquidity around the $2,000 price threshold.

Market Split Between Retail and Whales

Analysis of trade sizes by Hyblock reveals a split in market activity. The cumulative volume delta (CVD) for smaller trades (between $0 and $10,000) is approximately $95 million, indicating consistent buying pressure from retail investors. In contrast, larger trade brackets show net selling activity, with the $10,000–$100,000 category recording a CVD of roughly -$162 million and the $100,000+ category near -$357 million.

The bid-ask ratio has shown marginal improvement, rising to around 0.2 before dipping to 0.03, suggesting a slight increase in buying interest in recent sessions. This follows a period of negative readings and points to short-term stabilization rather than strong market conviction.

The aggregated open interest is currently around $9.41 billion, a decrease from nearly $10 billion in late February, indicating that leverage has been reduced as the price consolidates between $1,900 and $2,000. If retail accumulation continues and large-scale selling subsides, bullish positioning could become more aligned, potentially amplifying price movements if ETH solidifies above the $2,000-$2,150 range due to the reduced exchange supply.
