Deep Dive
Morgan Stanley is set to launch its first Bitcoin Trust, a significant move integrating traditional finance with blockchain technology. The firm has partnered with Coinbase Custody and BNY Mellon for the custody and management of the fund's assets. This development follows Morgan Stanley's earlier filing for the Bitcoin Trust on January 6, 2026, making it the first US bank to do so. The firm has also filed for a Solana ETF.
According to an updated filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Coinbase Custody Trust Company will be responsible for holding and safeguarding the Bitcoin. BNY Mellon will manage the fund's accounting and provide shareholder services, handling the creation and redemption of shares. To mitigate hacking risks, the majority of the fund's Bitcoin will be stored in offline "cold storage" vaults, with private keys kept offline. While some Bitcoin may be transferred to active trading wallets for share transactions, the fund's insurance is shared among customers and may not cover all potential losses. BNY Mellon will also serve as the fund administrator, transfer agent, and cash custodian, managing accounts and cash for ETF transactions. The ETF is designed as a passive fund that will directly hold Bitcoin, tracking its price without the use of derivatives or leverage.
This initiative marks a significant expansion of Morgan Stanley's involvement in the cryptocurrency space. The firm had previously filed for Bitcoin and Solana ETFs, representing a major entry into crypto ETFs by a leading US bank. This move builds upon the company's October initiative to broaden crypto access for all its clients. Other financial institutions are also increasing their crypto offerings; for instance, Bank of America began allowing its wealthy clients to recommend crypto allocations in January. The growing adoption by Wall Street is attributed to increased regulatory clarity in the US, particularly the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency's (OCC) permission for banks to act as intermediaries in crypto transactions, which has reduced barriers between traditional finance and cryptocurrencies.
Following the news of Morgan Stanley's Bitcoin Trust development, the price of Bitcoin surged by over 8%. The cryptocurrency is currently trading at $72,128, recovering from recent volatility. While Bitcoin has seen a 7.9% increase over the past week, it remains down nearly 8% on a monthly basis. The recent upward trend has generated significant optimism in the market.
