Roblox, a popular online gaming platform, is implementing a new AI-powered feature that rewrites profanity in chat messages rather than replacing them with "####." This system, known as real-time chat rephrasing, aims to keep conversations readable during gameplay while still enforcing the platform's community standards.
Previously, messages violating Roblox's profanity policies, such as "Hurry TF up!", would appear as "####." The new system will rephrase such messages to "Hurry up!" Rajiv Bhatia, Roblox Vice President of User and Discovery Product, stated that this approach maintains civility by guiding language toward appropriate terms and ensuring conversations stay on track.
This initiative follows Roblox's introduction of real-time warnings in May 2025, which alerted users to potential rule violations and encouraged them to reconsider their wording. Experiments showed these warnings led to a 5% reduction in filtered chat messages and a 6% reduction in consequences from abuse reports.
Despite these improvements, Roblox noted that the previous method of displaying filtered language as random characters often made chats difficult to follow. While players are notified when their text is rephrased, the company emphasizes that this does not alter its enforcement policies. Repeated violations will still result in the same consequences.
The rephrasing feature is currently available only for chats between age-verified users within similar age groups and supports all languages offered by Roblox's automatic translation tools. The development of this feature involved collaboration with members of Roblox's Teen Council to understand how teen players communicate during gameplay.
Roblox is also enhancing its text filtering system to better detect attempts to evade moderation, including variations like leetspeak. This move aligns with a growing trend in the gaming industry where AI is increasingly used for moderating player behavior. For instance, Activision deployed an AI-powered ToxMod system across Call of Duty titles, flagging over 2 million accounts for disruptive chats in 2024.
Roblox has been expanding its AI usage, having introduced real-time AI chat translation in February 2024, enabling cross-language communication in over 16 languages within Roblox chat. Bhatia acknowledged that the rephrasing feature may not always be perfect but stated the company's goal is to empower users to connect respectfully and enjoyably.
