Deep Dive
Short seller Culper Research is initiating a bearish position against ether (ETH) and related stocks like BitMine (BMNR), asserting that Ethereum's network economics have weakened following its recent upgrade. The firm's report, released on Thursday, states that the December 2025 "Fusaka" upgrade led to an oversupply of blockspace, negatively impacting ETH tokenomics and significantly reducing transaction fees. This reduction in fees has consequently lowered staking yields for validators, potentially creating a negative feedback loop that could diminish staking demand and network security.
The report also points to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin selling approximately 20,000 ETH, valued at around $40 million, this year. Culper Research contrasts this with bullish perspectives, such as those from Tom Lee, chairman of the Ethereum-centric treasury firm BitMine. Lee has cited increasing transaction counts and active addresses as indicators of strong network fundamentals. However, Culper argues these metrics are deceptive, suggesting that a substantial portion of the activity surge is due to address poisoning attacks. The firm estimates that Ethereum fees have fallen by approximately 90% since the upgrade, leading Culper to conclude that ETH is in a "death spiral" if utility is not increasing, as per Lee's own logic.
Culper's short thesis specifically targets BitMine (BMNR), identified as one of the largest corporate holders of ether. Since July, BitMine has acquired about 4.4 million ETH for its treasury. Due to a significant drop in ether prices from their recent peaks, these holdings are reportedly 45% underwater, resulting in approximately $7.4 billion in unrealized losses, according to data from DropsTab. BitMine had not responded to a request for comment by press time.
