The True Cost of Production

However, the reality is that while AI and emerging technologies can drastically reduce the marginal cost of goods and services, production will never be entirely free. Products still require labor, materials, energy, and infrastructure. Advances in AI and automation, coupled with highly efficient manufacturing like 3D printing and robotics, alongside abundant energy sources (potentially fusion or ultra-cheap solar), can make the marginal cost of many digital and physical goods approach zero. This is because automation handles production and logistics, advanced manufacturing minimizes waste, and affordable energy removes a key bottleneck.

Elon Musk's initiatives, such as prioritizing lunar manufacturing and AI with a goal of massive solar power generation, exemplify this push towards near-zero energy costs.
