First Working Quantum Battery Proves Bigger Really Does Mean Faster

Australian scientists have successfully built the world's first working prototype of a quantum battery, a device that utilizes quantum physics principles for energy storage and charging. Developed by researchers from CSIRO, RMIT University, and the University of Melbourne, this breakthrough challenges conventional battery limitations by charging faster as its capacity increases, a phenomenon defying classical physics.

Quantum Charging Mechanism

The prototype, a microscopic layered wafer of organic materials, is charged wirelessly via a laser pulse lasting only femtoseconds. It stores energy for nanoseconds, demonstrating a charging speed that is inversely proportional to the square root of the number of molecules (1/√N). This means larger quantum batteries charge faster, a stark contrast to traditional batteries where charging time increases with capacity.

Lead researcher James Quach explained that this collective quantum effect, termed "superabsorption," allows for coordinated energy sharing among molecules. While the current prototype's capacity is minuscule, the principle suggests that a battery charged in one minute could theoretically remain charged for years. The device operates at room temperature, offering a practical advantage over other quantum battery approaches requiring cryogenic cooling.

Potential Applications and Future Development

While the current quantum battery prototype is not yet suitable for consumer devices like phones or electric vehicles due to its low capacity, it holds significant promise for powering quantum computers. These advanced systems require coherent energy delivery without the noise introduced by conventional electronics. Quantum batteries, by operating on the same quantum principles, can provide this precise energy requirement.

Professor Andrew White noted that quantum batteries could supply energy coherently with minimal energy cost to quantum computers. CSIRO is actively seeking development partners, including EV manufacturers and investors, to advance this technology, which has moved from theoretical prediction to functional hardware.
