A growing number of UK politicians are calling for an outright ban on political donations made using cryptocurrency. Labour MP Rushanara Ali has become the latest voice to advocate for such a measure, citing concerns that crypto donations can be exploited for “foreign interference in our democracy.” She highlighted that the use of multiple wallets, fragmentation of donations to bypass reporting thresholds, and the anonymity offered by privacy coins present significant challenges to existing donation regulations.
Ali’s stance aligns with a broader sentiment among several British MPs. In January, seven Select Committee Chairs penned a letter to the Prime Minister urging the inclusion of an explicit provision to disallow cryptocurrency donations in the upcoming elections bill. They argued that the opaque and traceable nature of crypto assets makes them vulnerable to hostile foreign actors and poses a risk to democratic integrity.
Anti-corruption advocacy groups, including the UK Anti-Corruption Coalition and Spotlight on Corruption, have also voiced similar concerns. Spotlight on Corruption’s Susan Hawley noted that cryptocurrency donations carry substantial risks of illicit finance and foreign interference. She pointed out that the Electoral Commission currently lacks the necessary powers to effectively regulate these risks, and it would be burdensome for smaller parties to manage them, especially considering the relatively low percentage of the population that uses cryptocurrency.
Hawley also referenced international precedents, stating that countries like Ireland and Brazil have already implemented bans on crypto donations without significant negative repercussions. The Chair of the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy recently recommended a temporary moratorium on crypto donations until the Electoral Commission can provide statutory guidance. This guidance could include requiring parties to use only FCA-registered Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) and prohibiting donations routed through coin mixers.
However, Spotlight on Corruption argues that such guidance is insufficient as it is not legally binding. They emphasize the Electoral Commission's limited information-sharing capabilities and inability to regulate overseas donors. The organization advocates for a new “donor declaration” system, making it a criminal offense for donors to falsely declare that their funds did not originate from high-risk crypto sources or unregulated entities, thereby shifting the onus onto the donor.
Currently, Reform UK is the most prominent major party in the UK to accept cryptocurrency donations. Party leader Nigel Farage has positioned himself as a proponent of the crypto industry, advocating for “sensible regulation.” In December 2025, Reform UK received a substantial non-crypto donation from a Thailand-based investor linked to the parent company of stablecoin issuer Tether, which, following Farage’s previous mention of Tether, prompted calls for an investigation. Evidence submitted to a parliamentary inquiry indicated that Reform UK had not received any crypto donations exceeding the reporting threshold as of June 2025.
