Analysts observe a fundamental shift in Bitcoin mining economics. Unlike prior cycles where price surges of around 2x the pre-halving level cushioned the reward cut, this cycle saw Bitcoin peak in October 2025 and then decline, negating this buffer. Consequently, gross margins have fallen to levels comparable to previous bear markets. Some reports indicate mining costs per coin exceeding the spot price, resulting in losses for miners on each block. Seasonal factors, including higher electricity prices in 2025 and the episodic nature of transaction fees, have further exacerbated the squeeze, preventing fees from bridging the gap left by the halving.

Miners Explore New Strategies and Revenue Avenues

In response to strained mining revenues, firms are exploring alternative strategies. Wintermute suggests that many miners possess significant untapped capital, holding approximately 1% of Bitcoin’s total supply on their balance sheets. This BTC could be actively managed for yield through derivatives, lending, or other treasury strategies, treating it as a "working asset" rather than a passive reserve. A prominent new revenue opportunity lies in repurposing mining infrastructure for high-performance computing (HPC) and AI tasks. Companies are leveraging their vast power infrastructure in low-cost energy regions to train AI models or run data center operations. While this AI pivot is economically compelling, it requires substantial capital and infrastructure, making it a drastic step for many.

Industry Shifts and Future Outlook

Several major mining firms are already signaling moves towards AI and HPC. Marathon Digital Holdings, for instance, has acquired a stake in an AI/HPC operator and is now permitted to sell BTC reserves. Other companies like Core Scientific, Hut 8, Riot, and Terawulf are repurposing operations for GPU-backed compute or data-center projects. This trend reflects the AI sector's demand for energy-intensive compute resources.
