The discussion was ignited by criticisms suggesting that companies issuing both tokens and equity can create conflicting interests between these two groups.

Criticisms of Ripple's Business Model

Critic Zach Rynes argued that equity investors typically hold stronger legal claims to company profits compared to token holders, who often lack enforceable economic rights over revenue. Rynes alleged that Ripple has funded corporate acquisitions and stock buybacks through XRP sales to retail investors over the past decade, actions he claims benefit Ripple shareholders more than XRP holders. He also cited past court filings where Ripple reportedly stated that XRP's bridge-currency use case did not directly affect its price and was demand-neutral.

Further criticism was leveled at the XRP Ledger's market position, with Rynes noting its minimal share in real-world asset tokenization and stablecoin markets.

XRP Community Defense and Counterarguments

Ripple supporters have challenged these criticisms, reframing XRP as a network asset rather than equity tied to Ripple's profits. They argue that holders of open network tokens, like XRP, Ethereum, or Solana, do not receive a share of profits from the associated companies (Ripple, Consensys, Solana Labs, respectively). Defenders also disputed the interpretation of Ripple's statements on XRP's bridge currency function, suggesting that while usage doesn't guarantee price appreciation, it doesn't mean it has no economic effect.
