XRP Ledger (XRPL) validators have received a direct alert to upgrade to rippled version 2.6.2 to avoid being amendment-blocked in the next 13 days and 20 hours. The message, shared by validator Jon Nilsen on Twitter, stresses that failure to update could temporarily halt participation in network consensus. The update includes a fix for a critical bug and introduces the fixDirectoryLimit amendment, which removes previous directory page limits that constrained ledger operations.
Ripple CTO David Schwartz confirmed in a recent post that his hub has been running the updated rippled software for over a week without issues, signaling stability and readiness across major network nodes. This proactive adoption highlights ongoing efforts to maintain network security while ensuring validators comply with protocol upgrades. Additional tests by smaller independent validators show the upgrade performs efficiently under high transaction loads, suggesting network reliability will remain strong throughout the transition period.
Smart Escrows Expand XRP Ledger Capabilities
Version 2.6.2 also prepares the XRPL for advanced programmability through Smart Escrows, enabling on-chain escrow contracts with custom conditions. These contracts allow funds to be released based on criteria such as XRP price using oracles, giving developers more flexibility in managing transactions. RippleX software engineer Mayukha Vadari explained that Smart Features mark the first step toward broader permissionless programmability on the XRPL, with Smart Escrows as the foundational component.
Currently, XRPL escrows only hold XRP, but the upcoming TokenEscrow amendment under voting will allow handling IOUs and multi-purpose tokens (MPTs). Validators who upgrade promptly ensure the network can fully leverage these new functionalities, improving both security and operational efficiency. Experts note that these updates make the XRPL more attractive for enterprise applications and decentralized finance projects, potentially driving increased adoption over the coming months.
