How Walrus (WAL) Works

Dual-Token System
Walrus utilizes a dual-token architecture composed of WAL and FROST tokens to manage its ecosystem.

For every WAL token, there exists a proportional number of FROST sub-tokens (1 WAL = 10 billion FROST), which handle granular accounting and delegation at the validator level.
This design encourages high network availability and reliability—storage node operators who hold significant token stakes participate as storage validators and are entrusted with maintaining data integrity and uptime.
Breakthrough Erasure Coding System
Unlike conventional replication-based distributed storage systems, Walrus employs a novel erasure coding mechanism called Red Stuff.
This system uses two-dimensional (2D) erasure coding, breaking large datasets into smaller fragments that are then distributed across the storage network.
The key advantage of Red Stuff lies in its efficiency: it achieves the same fault tolerance as traditional replication systems (typically 4–5× redundancy) but with far less data overhead and lower operational costs.
Even if several storage nodes fail simultaneously, the system can still reconstruct the original dataset accurately—offering robust resilience without the heavy redundancy burden.

What is WAL?
WAL is the native utility token of the Walrus protocol, built on the Sui blockchain. It plays a critical role in maintaining the network’s operations, governance, and economic sustainability. With a maximum supply of 5 billion tokens, WAL follows a deflationary model, where token supply gradually decreases through a burn mechanism to support long-term value stability.
