Strategy stopped purchasing Bitcoin last week while announcing $3.9 billion in unrealized gains for Q3 2025. Michael Saylor, the company’s executive chairman, posted on social media that there would be no new acquisitions, breaking the firm’s tradition of buying during price rallies.
The Virginia-based firm currently holds 640,031 Bitcoin acquired at an average price below $74,000 per coin. Strategy’s Bitcoin stockpile was valued at approximately $79 billion as Bitcoin traded near its all‑time high of $125,000 over the weekend.
Saylor referenced a $9 billion gain in his announcement, which includes both Q3’s $3.89 billion unrealized profit and an additional $5.8 billion appreciation after the quarter ended. The company paid $140 million in dividend payments during the same period across its preferred share offerings.
According to SEC filings, Strategy reported a $1.12 billion deferred tax expense alongside the gains. The firm’s digital asset carrying value reached $73.21 billion as of Sept. 30, with related tax liabilities totaling $7.43 billion.
This marks the third time in 2025 that Strategy has paused its weekly Bitcoin purchases, with previous breaks coinciding with Q1 and Q2 endings. The company has been shifting funding sources from common stock programs to perpetual preferred stocks for future acquisitions.
Strategy shares gained 2.8 % on Monday following the announcement, climbing to $361. The stock has rallied 25 % year‑to‑date, though it reached $450 in July before pulling back to current levels.
Despite the pause, the company’s Bitcoin position remains up 68 % overall according to treasury tracking data. Strategy maintains over 3 % of Bitcoin’s total 21 million supply, representing more than $32 billion in paper gains at current market prices. Traders on prediction markets had anticipated a purchase, with odds collapsing from 60 % to 1 % after Saylor’s Sunday post.
