OpenAI's Ambitious Hardware Plans
OpenAI is gearing up to introduce its inaugural hardware device in the latter half of 2026. Chief Communications Officer Christopher Lehane highlighted "devices" as a significant upcoming development for the company in 2026, although a precise sales date remains undetermined.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2026, Lehane articulated his vision of AI integrated into everyday devices and gadgets as a near-future innovation.
"I think maybe towards the latter part of the year, you’ll see AI in devices. It’s well known that we’re working with Jony Ive, the maker of the iPhone, on a device, and there’s a lot more that will be coming on that," Lehane stated.
The Enigmatic OpenAI Hardware Device
Following the acquisition of Jony Ive’s AI hardware company, CEO Sam Altman has alluded to a streamlined AI device. The design studio founded by Sir Jonathan “Jony” Ive, renowned for iconic Apple products, was acquired for $6.5 billion. Altman has referred to Ive as the preeminent designer globally.
Multiple reports suggest the company is developing compact, screen-less devices, potentially wearables, designed for conversational interaction. Speculation points to a pocket-sized, pen-like device reminiscent of an iPod Shuffle, utilizing cameras and microphones for AI tasks such as note-taking.
Another rumored device, codenamed "Sweetpea," is described as egg-shaped and equipped with always-on ChatGPT for voice interactions and a 2nm chip. Altman has previously characterized this product as more "peaceful" and user-friendly than a smartphone.
Altman's broader ambition is to transition beyond the smartphone era into what he terms "ambient computing." He envisions lightweight wearables capable of real-time interpretation and processing of the environment, responding to queries and analyzing sensory input without the limitations of traditional screens or keyboards.
Lehane emphasized that devices are a top priority for OpenAI in 2026, with further updates anticipated later in the year. While the company may not launch the product for sale in 2026, a formal introduction to the consumer market is expected. Product shipments are most likely to commence in 2027.
Lehane also indicated that 2026 will witness accelerated scientific research driven by AI, leading to discoveries that will influence daily life. This builds upon advancements in agentic AI from the previous year, which empowers non-coders to create programs and allows everyday users to leverage AI capabilities previously accessible only to specialists.
OpenAI Introduces Ads to ChatGPT Amidst Legal Challenges
OpenAI has confirmed its intention to begin testing advertisements within ChatGPT for users in the US on its free and Go tiers. The company has assured that paid tiers, including Pro, Business, and Enterprise, will remain ad-free.
"As ChatGPT becomes more capable and widely used, we’re looking at ways to continue offering more intelligence to everyone," the company stated.
OpenAI also asserted that users can trust that ChatGPT's responses are "driven by what’s objectively useful, never by advertising." The company further guaranteed that user conversations would not be shared with or sold to advertisers.
This advertising initiative surfaces amidst a lawsuit filed by Elon Musk, who alleges that OpenAI violated its original nonprofit mission by restructuring into a for-profit entity. Musk is reportedly seeking substantial damages from OpenAI and Microsoft.
Musk's filing contends that he provided approximately $38 million, representing about 60% of OpenAI’s initial seed funding. He also claims to have contributed credibility, assisted in recruiting staff, and connected the founders with crucial contacts. The lawsuit argues that Musk is entitled to profits generated by OpenAI and Microsoft through what he alleges is the misuse of his early contributions.
