The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched the NIN Authentication (NINAuth) App, a significant development aimed at enhancing digital accountability across the nation. This innovation by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is expected to bolster efficiency, transparency, and accountability in governance.
The app, which was first introduced in May 2025 and officially launched on Thursday by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will soon be mandated for all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) for staff and data verification purposes.
President Tinubu stated that this mandate aligns with his administration's Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes the use of technology to dismantle bureaucratic obstacles and mitigate opportunities for inefficiency and corruption.
“Today’s official launch of the NIMC NINAuth App heralds a remarkable day in our nation’s digital public infrastructure journey as Africa’s largest identity database. This innovation marks yet another milestone in our collective pursuit of a digitally-empowered Nigeria,” he remarked.
He further elaborated, “Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, our administration is committed to leveraging technology to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accountability in governance. Central to this agenda is the modernisation of digital infrastructure to eliminate unnecessary bottlenecks and ensure that every Nigerian, regardless of background or location, has access to essential services without the frustration of bureaucratic delays.”

Empowering Citizens with Data Transparency and Control
A key feature of the NINAuth App is its decentralized consent mechanism, which empowers Nigerian citizens by giving them direct control over their personal data.
According to NIMC, users can now grant, revoke, or review access to data linked to their National Identification Number (NIN). This functionality is designed to enhance user privacy, security, and personal autonomy. Additionally, the app will facilitate faster passport registration, streamline NYSC registration, and simplify NELFUND registration through instant NIN verification.
“For businesses and enterprises, the application fosters trust, speed, and regulatory compliance, while for the government, it promotes secure access, oversight, and transparency in service delivery,” stated NIMC.

NIMC further explained that the NINAuth app is designed for a wide range of applications, from roadside vendors seeking micro loans to telecommunication companies onboarding new subscribers, making identity verification processes quicker, more secure, and simpler for all users.
By placing citizens in charge of their data, the app introduces an auditable and transparent consent layer, bringing Nigeria in line with global best practices in data management.
Unifying Verification for Equitable National Development
The mandatory adoption of NINAuth by MDAs signifies a shift towards a secure and unified system for all government transactions. This digital infrastructure is particularly important given NIMC's extensive reach.
As of June 30, 2025, NIMC has successfully enrolled over 121 million Nigerians. Lagos State leads in enrollment numbers with more than 12.9 million individuals registered. The distribution of enrollments shows a near-even balance between the northern and southern regions of the country.
For governmental bodies, the application is instrumental in promoting secure access, effective oversight, and enhanced transparency in service delivery. President Tinubu emphasized that a credible and inclusive National Identity Management System is foundational to achieving national development objectives.

“My fellow Nigerians, the future we seek is one where technology empowers every citizen and where trust in governance is built on efficiency, transparency, and inclusiveness. The launch of this application demonstrates that the promises we have made as a government are being responsibly measured and are manifesting in tangible reforms that improve daily life.
“Let us all embrace this new era. Let us protect it, use it responsibly, and ensure that it serves as a bridge, connecting our people, our institutions, and our aspirations for a more prosperous nation. Together, we are building a nation where every identity counts and every citizen must matter,” President Tinubu concluded.
The new app is set to ensure that the extensive national database is reliably utilized to support crucial national functions. By linking resources directly to verified and authenticated identities, the app aims to close loopholes that facilitate fraud, thereby making the distribution of public funds demonstrably more transparent and equitable.
