From Betting to Finance: A Gamble on Legitimacy
For years, prediction markets were dismissed as a playground for gamblers and speculators. But in the fall of 2025, a quiet American startup called Kalshi changed that perception.
Three hundred million dollars in new funding pushed its valuation to five billion. Every major venture capital firm wanted in. What investors saw was not a betting platform but the beginning of a new asset class. Kalshi was turning the future itself into something that could be traded.
The story began with restraint. Founders Tarek Mansour and Luana Lopes Lara, both graduates of MIT, did not rush to build hype or chase decentralization. Instead, they walked into the offices of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission and asked a strange but powerful question: Can events themselves be listed as legal contracts?
They spent two and a half years building the system and passing every legal test. In the end, Kalshi became the first federally regulated exchange for event contracts in the United States.

Each contract traded between one and ninety nine cents, showing the market’s view of the event’s probability.If the event happened, the Yes side paid out one dollar. Prediction stopped being a feeling. It became a financial instrument, a way to express belief through price and to turn information into value.
The Liquidity Engine: Making the Future Tradeable
Before 2024, Kalshi was a small community with limited volume and little attention. Then in 2025 everything changed.
When Kalshi opened markets for the Super Bowl, the NBA Finals, the Oscars, and even movie box office predictions, the public finally noticed. Prediction was no longer a niche idea. It had become entertainment and finance at once.
Kalshi reduced the world to a one dollar ticket. The retail investor trading on interest rates and the sports fan betting on championships were suddenly using the same market structure. By mid 2025, Kalshi had processed about fifty billion dollars in trades and captured roughly sixty percent of the global prediction market. In September alone, users traded more than one point four billion dollars worth of contracts, more than the entire sector had seen the previous year.
Liquidity became its core advantage. Every trade added information. Every market made collective judgment sharper. Somewhere between a football game and a central bank meeting, speculation turned into signal.
Kalshi proved a simple truth. When uncertainty itself becomes a product, the world can be priced.
Law, Ethics and the Long Road to Global Expansion
Growth never comes without friction.
As Kalshi expanded from monetary policy to sports and entertainment, it entered the gray space between federal law and state level gambling rules.
Federally, Kalshi’s event contracts were legal derivatives. But when users began trading on sports outcomes, some states pushed back. In early 2025, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey and Maryland opened investigations, accusing Kalshi of running unlicensed betting. Maryland’s attorney general even claimed that more than three billion dollars in sports trades had taken place in six months.
Kalshi fought back in court. Backed by its federal license, it argued that CFTC authorization overruled state law. It won early rulings in Nevada and New Jersey that stopped local enforcement. To strengthen its position, Kalshi hired Sara Slane, the former vice president of the American Gaming Association, who had once helped end the national ban on sports betting. Her goal was to help regulators see prediction markets as a legitimate financial tool, not a gambling product.
Kalshi’s response was to double down on transparency. It banned markets on death, violence and disaster. It used verified public data as the source of truth for all outcomes. Every trade was cleared through a regulated custodian.
In a world of legal gray zones, Kalshi built a clear and defensible highway.
Meanwhile, its reach grew beyond the United States. By late 2025, the platform was open to users in more than one hundred forty countries, excluding only regions where laws were restrictive, such as the United Kingdom, Canada and Singapore. Each jurisdiction required new rules for payments, taxes and compliance, but the idea was always the same. Prediction could become a piece of public financial infrastructure.
In Kalshi’s view, regulation is not a cage. It is the cost of trust.
The War for the Future’s Narrative
Across the crypto world, other prediction platforms were chasing the same dream through different paths. Polymarket used blockchain for transparency and anonymity. Augur stayed fully decentralized. But in 2025, regulation started moving faster than ideology.
Polymarket, fined by the CFTC in its early years, is now seeking licenses to return to the United States. Augur still runs freely on Ethereum but has few active users.

Kalshi must prove that it can live within the law while still innovating beyond it, balancing the slow rhythm of regulation with the speed of technology.
The five billion dollar valuation is not the end. It is only a checkpoint. In every market, the most valuable commodity is not probability but the right to define it.
