The Filecoin Foundation, working alongside FilOz and key ecosystem developers, has officially launched the Filecoin Onchain Cloud on November 18, 2025. This initiative represents a significant step toward bringing verifiable storage, retrieval, and payments entirely on-chain. The project introduces a decentralized cloud stack specifically designed for developers who require transparent, resilient, and customizable infrastructure that extends beyond the capabilities of traditional centralized providers.
The Onchain Cloud aims to make every layer of infrastructure, from storage to compute to payments, completely open, auditable, and interoperable. This allows developers to verify the exact location of their data storage, the methods of data retrieval, and the timing of all payments, thereby establishing a new paradigm of trust for cloud services.
By leveraging a globally distributed network of independent storage providers instead of relying on a single company or data center, the system is engineered to enhance uptime and mitigate the risk of outages that are frequently encountered with centralized platforms such as AWS.
Key Features and Components
A central element of this launch is Filecoin Beam, a tool that bridges on-chain payments with verifiable data delivery. This component utilizes a retrieval network that operates much like a decentralized Content Delivery Network (CDN). This design facilitates a sustainable economic model where storage providers are compensated for their consistent and reliable delivery of data. This architecture grants developers enhanced control, including the ability to detect data tampering in real-time, receive proof-of-storage guarantees, and ensure transparent data provenance.
Building on Ecosystem Progress
The Filecoin Onchain Cloud is positioned as a foundational technology for the next generation of AI applications, data platforms, and high-integrity systems. Its development builds upon years of progress within the Filecoin ecosystem, including the introduction of the Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM) in 2023. This launch signifies a crucial milestone in the ongoing effort to construct a decentralized and verifiable alternative to the current web infrastructure.
