Elon Musk has officially launched Grokipedia, his AI-powered encyclopedia that aims to be a "truth" focused alternative to Wikipedia. The launch comes amid ongoing disagreements with Wikipedia regarding its editorial practices.
In a series of posts on X on Monday, Musk stated that Grokipedia is "fully open source, so anyone can use it for anything at no cost" and that its primary goal is to present "truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth."
Early observations by users have highlighted differences in content presentation. One user noted that the Grokipedia article on George Floyd, an African-American man who died during an arrest by a police officer, began by emphasizing his extensive criminal record. In contrast, the Wikipedia article on the same subject reportedly foregrounded that he was killed by a "white" police officer.
Musk further commented, "We will never be perfect, but we shall nonetheless strive towards that goal."
The launch was reportedly delayed by a few days as Musk aimed to "purge out the propaganda" from Grokipedia.
The service experienced a temporary outage shortly after its launch but was promptly restored and is currently fully functional. At present, the platform claims to host over 885,000 articles.
While specific details about Grokipedia's internal processes are still emerging, its AI-driven approach signifies a distinct organizational structure compared to Wikipedia.
Grokipedia leverages X's Grok AI to lead content creation and moderation. This contrasts with Wikipedia's model, which relies on a combination of volunteer editors and automated tools.
Content Moderation and User Interaction
Musk explained that users will have the ability to propose additions or modifications to content on Grokipedia, with the AI retaining the ultimate authority in decision-making.
"Grok generated about 1M articles using a lot of compute," Musk stated via X. "You will be able to ask Grok to add/modify/delete articles and it will either take the action or tell you it won’t and why."
Criticism and Bias Allegations
Elon Musk has repeatedly criticized Wikipedia, alleging that it exhibits a bias towards the left in politics and culture.
While Musk's direct criticisms are not explicitly detailed in Grokipedia's article about Wikipedia, the article does cite studies that suggest the platform leans left. The article states, "Studies analyzing article language and tone reveal deviations from neutrality, with right-leaning political figures and topics more frequently depicted negatively compared to left-leaning counterparts, suggesting the policies do not fully mitigate ideological skews arising from editor demographics and source selection."
Conversely, Wikipedia's article on Grokipedia addresses concerns raised by critics who suggest that Grokipedia may be slanted towards "far-right" perspectives aligned with Elon Musk's viewpoints.
The Wikipedia article notes, "Critics have highlighted entries that promote far-right perspectives or favor Musk's viewpoints.[7] NBC News noted that the Grokipedia entry for Musk did not mention the hand gesture he made in January 2025, which many viewed as a Nazi salute, while Wikipedia's article does,[5]."
