Timothy Misir, head of research at BRN, described the pattern as characteristic of late-cycle dynamics. He stated whale accumulation has decelerated while retail wallets are buying, which typically increases short-term vulnerability in crypto markets.
Onchain data confirms long-term holders and large wallets have substantially slowed their buying pace in recent weeks. Wallets holding less than 1 Bitcoin have simultaneously accelerated purchases into PriceDips, according to blockchain analytics.
Misir characterized Monday morning's sell-off as a liquidity and positioning event rather than a fundamental regime change. He noted short-term holders experienced spiked realized losses during the decline, indicating an emotional market reset.
Market Sell-off and Liquidations
The Asian session saw Bitcoin plunge to approximately $85,600, erasing roughly $144 billion in total cryptocurrency market value. Liquidations exceeded $600 million over 24 hours, with long positions accounting for an estimated $567 million of that total.
Catalysts for the Downturn
QCP Capital attributed the overnight weakness to multiple Asian catalysts. Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda's hawkish comments pushed Japan's two-year yield to 1%, raising December rate hike probabilities and triggering the Bitcoin slide from $91,000 to the mid-$86,000 range.
China's non-manufacturing PMI contracted for the first time in nearly three years, intensifying concerns about regional demand and global liquidity conditions. Strategy CEO Phong Le's statement that his firm might sell Bitcoin reserves under certain conditions sparked panic selling and forced liquidations among leveraged traders ahead of a critical December index-review period.
Conflicting Macroeconomic Signals
The sell-off occurred despite improving macro conditions, including the end of U.S. quantitative tightening, rising rate-cut odds, and $1 billion in weekly inflows to crypto investment products. November had seen $3.5 billion in outflows, representing the largest monthly total since February.
Future Market Outlook
QCP noted a pullback was expected after a 15% rebound from $81,000 lows, but questioned whether Bitcoin can defend prior support levels as sentiment deteriorates. Gold has attracted safety flows and touched $4,261, increasingly competing with cryptocurrency for risk capital.
Misir stated upcoming U.S. economic data including ISM PMIs, ADP, JOLTS, and PCE will determine if Monday's drop represents capitulation or signals a deeper correction phase. He added Bitcoin needs to reclaim the low $90,000s with decisively positive ETF and on-chain flows to regain stability.
