Only around 2.05 million coins remain available for mining out of the fixed 21 million. The issuance pace slowed sharply after the April 2024 halving, which reduced block rewards to 3.125 Bitcoin. This keeps supply inflation under 1%, a level often compared with strict monetary regimes in traditional finance. Several research desks note that most newly mined coins flow directly into institutional custody, corporate treasuries and funds that view Bitcoin as a long-term reserve.
Although the 95% figure does not trigger an instant market shift, it reinforces Bitcoin’s role as a reliable store of value in contrast to inflationary currencies. Mining Economics Shift as Bitcoin Nears Its Limit
Diminishing new supply raises pressure on miners who already face tighter margins after the latest halving. Operators using older hardware or higher-cost energy sources face increasing challenges and may leave the network as rewards fall. Meanwhile, miners with lower energy costs and upgraded equipment continue to scale, helping the global hash rate remain resilient.
A gradual transition toward fee-based revenue is underway. Recent episodes of network congestion demonstrate how transaction fees can sustain miners as block rewards decline, although this shift remains uneven across the sector. Some analysts suggest that fee markets could become more competitive as new protocols expand activity on the base layer.
