PayPal, an American multinational fintech company, has announced its adoption of the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) to expand payments and commerce directly within the ChatGPT platform by 2026. This strategic move aims to seamlessly bridge conversational AI with secure financial transactions, positioning the fintech at the heart of the emerging agentic commerce era.
According to the company, the partnership means millions of ChatGPT users will soon be able to check out instantly using PayPal, with the payment platform supporting processing for merchants leveraging OpenAI Instant Checkout.
“Hundreds of millions of people turn to ChatGPT each week for help with everyday tasks, including finding products they love, and over 400 million use PayPal to shop. By partnering with OpenAI and adopting the Agentic Commerce Protocol, PayPal will power payments and commerce experiences that help people go from chat to checkout in just a few taps for our joint customer bases,” Alex Chriss, President and CEO of PayPal said.
This partnership unlocks the convenience of PayPal’s wallet in Instant Checkout. This includes multiple funding options such as bank accounts, balances, and cards, as well as buyer and seller protections, and post-purchase services such as tracking and dispute resolution.

Challenges for Nigerian Entrepreneurs with PayPal
The biggest challenge facing Nigerian entrepreneurs is the “send-only” restriction imposed on local personal PayPal accounts. With a Nigerian account, users can send money, shop on international websites, and pay for digital services. However, to receive payments, it is necessary to open a business account, link a virtual dollar card, and share your email with clients.
This restriction means that if a client wants to pay for services rendered, the regular Nigerian PayPal account will not facilitate the transaction. Consequently, the benefit of “selling on ChatGPT” is only immediately available to Nigerian businesses that have already established a compliant, international payment receiving structure.

Benefits for Nigerians from the New Initiative
1. Frictionless Global Sourcing and Shopping
For Nigerian consumers and businesses that purchase goods or international software, the integration provides a highly streamlined checkout experience. The AI can identify a product, and the user can complete the purchase in moments using their existing PayPal wallet, significantly reducing the need to repeatedly enter card details. This enhances convenience in cross-border shopping.
2. Built-in International Security and Protection
Every transaction conducted using PayPal on ChatGPT is fortified by the service’s Buyer Protection and dispute resolution mechanisms. As consumers increasingly rely on AI to discover products, this protection offers a vital safety net against potential fraud or incorrect orders, thereby fostering trust in this novel form of digital shopping.
3. Accelerated Access to Global AI Tools
As AI-driven tools and premium services, such as the new OpenAI Instant Checkout, become the global standard for productivity, the seamless integration of a trusted payment method simplifies the subscription process. Nigerians can more easily subscribe to essential ChatGPT Enterprise or other paid AI services, ensuring they maintain competitiveness within the global remote work and technology ecosystem.
4. New Global Sales Visibility for Compliant Sellers
Nigerian sellers who have already established a legally compliant method for receiving PayPal payments, either through a registered foreign business entity or a third-party payment gateway that accepts PayPal, gain access to a powerful new distribution channel. Their product catalogs can be integrated into the AI’s commerce protocol, exposing them to a vast and highly engaged global consumer base of ChatGPT users.
5. Future-Proofing for Agentic Commerce
By positioning its wallet at the core of OpenAI’s agentic commerce protocol, PayPal is setting a precedent for how future AI transactions will be conducted. Nigerian users who maintain an active PayPal account are automatically prepared to adopt future innovative commerce features as they are rolled out globally, making their existing digital wallet a future-proof asset for the forthcoming era of AI-driven finance.
